In the mechanical parts machining industry, plastic is the kind of material used quite common. What’s more, machining is a type of common processing techniques, so what kinds of plastics suitable for machining?

1.ABS

ABS is one of the five compound resins that has outstanding impact resistance, heat resistance, chemical resistance, and electrical performance. It is characterized by its advantages of easy to process, stable product sizes, good surface brightness, and is easy to coating and coloring.

It also can be used for secondary processing such as surface metal coating, electroplating, welding, hot pressing, bonding, etc.

Thermoplastic engineering plastics are widely used in industrial fields such as machinery, automobiles, electronics, instrumentation, textiles, and construction.

ABS is usually a light yellow or milky white particle amorphous resin, which is one of the most widely used  engineer plastic.

2. Nylon PA6

PA6 has outstanding comprehensive performance, including mechanical strength, rigidity, toughness, mechanical forces, and wear resistance. These characteristics, plus great electrical isolation performance and chemical resistance.

It is a type of general material used to produce mechanical internal parts and maintaining parts.

3. Nylon PA66

Compared to PA6, PA66 has better mechanical strength, rigidity, heat resistance, wear resistance, creep resistance, however, its impact strength and mechanical forces are low, which are suitable for automatic lathe processing.

PA66 is widely used in the automotive industry, instrument casings, and other products that require impact resistance and high strength.

4. nylon PA 12

The scientific name of PA12 is polybutylamide, which is a semi crystalline crystalline thermoplastic material. It is similar to PA11 on the aspect of features, however, the crystal structure is different. PA12 is a kind of great electro isolating material.

Like other polyamides, the isolation function is not affected by humidity, and it has great impact resistance, mechanical and chemical stability. PA12 has a lot of improvement in many aspects in terms of plasticity and performance.

Compared to PA6 and PA66, the melting point and density are lower than that of formers, but higher in the returning rate. PA12 has no resistance to strong

Oxidation. The typical application range of nylon 12 includes: commercial equipment, such as water meters, cable sleeves, mechanical cams, sliding mechanisms, photovoltaic backplates, and bearings.

5. polyvinyl chloride

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), peroxides, and vinyl chloride monomers polymerize under the action of light and heat in the promoter of azo compounds or analogues (VCM), or polymers based on the polymerization mechanism.

Vinyl chloride homopolymer and vinyl chloride copolymer are collectively referred to as vinyl chloride resin. PVC was once the most common plastic in the world and widely used in building materials, industrial products, daily necessities, flooring, ceramic tiles, synthetic leather, pipelines, wires and cables, packaging films, bottles, foam materials, sealing materials, fibers, etc.

6.POM

POM is a type of material with good rigidity and elasticity, as well as good creeping resistance geometric stability and impact resistance even under low temperature.

It includes materials with homopolymers and copolymers. The former has great elasticity and fatigue strength, but hard to process, while the latter one has good heat stability, chemical stability and easy to process. Both of them are crystal materials and is difficult to absorb water. The high crystallinity leads to very high shrinking rate, up to 2% -3.5%. The shrinking rate varies from the type of steel.

POM has very low friction rate and great geometrical stability, especially for the manufacturing of gear and bear. Due to the heat resistance, it is used in producing pipe equipment (valve, pump tank), as well as lawn equipment.

The material used to make tools, like cameras, CD, LD, MD players, radios, headphones, stereo, OA equipment, printers, keyboards, CD-ROM disk drives, washing machines, dryers, automotive components, such as seat belt mechanical components, door handles, mirrors, engine rooms, cameras, watches, building materials and other precision components, game consoles and stationery

7. PMMA acrylic acid

Polymethyl methacrylate is a popular name, abbreviated as PMMA.

The chemical name of polymer transparent materials is polymethyl methacrylate, which is a polymer compound of polymethyl methacrylate, an important thermoplastic material developed in the early stages.

Organic glass is divided into colorless transparent, colored transparent, pearl light, and embossed organic glass. PMMA is commonly referred to as acrylic acid, mid roof acrylic acid, and acrylic acid.

PMMA has advantages such as good transparency, chemical stability, mechanical properties, weather resistance, easy dyeing, processing, and beautiful appearance.

8.PC

Polycarbonate (PC) is a polymer containing carbonate bases in its molecular chain. According to the structure of ester groups, they can be divided into fat, aroma, fat aroma, etc.

Fatty and aromatic hydrocarbon polycarbonates are limited in their use in engineering plastics due to their low mechanical properties.

The three main application areas of PC engineering plastics are glass assembly, automotive, and electronic and electrical industries, followed by industrial machinery components, optical discs, packaging, office equipment such as computers, medical and health, film, and leisure protective equipment.

9. Polypropylene

Polypropylene is a thermoplastic resin made by polymerizing propylene, of which the relative density is only 0.89-0.91, making it one of the lightest plastics in the world.

Due to the high crystallinity, this material has good surface hardness and scratch resistance. PP does not have environmental stress cracking issues.

10. PPS

PPS plastic (Polyphenylene sulfide) is a type of thermoplastic material, with great comprehensive performance, which is featured by the heat resistance, corrosion resistance, mechanical performance, and great electrical isolation (especially high frequency isolation). The white ones are prone to break and there is metal sound when hitting on the ground.

The transmittance is second only to organic glass, with good water resistance and chemical stability. It is a plastic with excellent flame retardancy and non-flammability. The strength is average and the stiffness is good, but the quality is brittle and prone to stress embrittlement. It is susceptible to weak organic solvents such as benzene and gasoline, and can be used for a long time at a temperature of up to 260 ° C. It stabilizes at 400 ° C in air or nitrogen.

By adding glass fiber and other reinforcing materials for modification, the impact strength, heat resistance, and other mechanical properties can be significantly improved. The density increased from 1.6 to 1.9, and the molding shrinkage was less than 0.15-0.25%. Suitable for the manufacturing of heat-resistant components, insulation components, chemical equipment, optical equipment, and other components.

11.PEEK

PEEK resin is a special engineering plastic with great performance. Compared to other types of engineering plastics, it is durable to high temperatures of 260 degrees Celsius, its good mechanical properties, self-lubricating properties, strong chemical corrosion resistance, flame retardancy, strong peel resistance, strong wear resistance, nitric acid, concentrated sulfuric acid, radiation resistance, corrosion resistance, corrosion resistance, super mechanical properties make it the best option for high-end machinery, nuclear engineering, aviation and other technologies

12.PTFE

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) (commonly known as “King of Plastics, Hara”), trademark Teflon. The products made of this material is commonly referred to as a “non-adhesive coating”. A synthetic polymer material in which all hydrogen atoms in polyethylene are replaced by fluorine.

This material has acid and alkali resistance, is resistant to various organic solvents, and is almost insoluble in all solvents. Meanwhile, polytetrafluoroethylene has the characteristic of high temperature resistance.

Due to the extremely low friction coefficient, it can be used as a lubrication or an ideal coating without adhering to the inner layer of pots or water pipes.

13. Polyurethane PU

Polyurethane is a polymer with – NHCOO repeating structural units in the main chain, abbreviated as PU, including hard polyurethane plastics, soft polyurethane plastics, polyurethane elastomers, and other forms, including thermoplastic and thermosetting. The raw materials usually present in a resin state.

Choosing suitable materials can produce better products with more advantages in precision processing of special plastic products. If you are unsure about your product materials, you can consult GREFEE for product information.
